Artillerymen direct fire an M777A2 155 mm lightweight howitzer at the Rodriguez Live-Fire Complex Aug. 21 as part of Korean Marine Exchange Program 13-8. For artillerymen, direct fire is used when the enemy comes within 2000 meters of the battery’s location. It no longer requires coordinates to plot and engage, but relies on the accuracy of the artilleryman looking through the gun’s sights. The artillerymen are with Battery I, 3rd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, currently assigned to 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force under the unit deployment program.
