Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Rct. Brandon Baird, Platoon 1065, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, dives behind a tree for cover Aug. 23, 2013, on a combat training course on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits such as Baird, an 18-year-old native of Holland Patent, N.Y., maneuvered through the course in groups of two or four. The course, comprised of various obstacles such as concertina wire, small moats and walls, is part of Basic Warrior Training week, during which recruits learn basic field skills they will build on throughout their entire Marine Corps careers. Delta Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 13, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
