Rct. Markel Quinn, Platoon 1065, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, uses his rifle to hold up concertina wire on a combat training course Aug. 23, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Quinn, an 18-year-old Atlanta native, maneuvered over and under various obstacles such as walls, small moats and concertina wire. This course is part of Basic Warrior Training week, during which recruits learn basic field skills they will build on throughout their Marine Corps careers. Delta Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 13, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
