Pvt. Alex Schearback, combat engineer with Glenville's Alpha Company, 48th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, ties all of his knots before going out on the simulation lane. Schearback outshines his peers by far. A Brooklet, Ga., native, Schearback joined at age 17 while still in high school. "Well you see, my daddy is former Army. He was a radio operator in Vietnam and Korea," explains Schearback. "Both my stepbrothers are in the Army too, so I signed up to do my part. I love my country and am proud to wear the uniform like my family." Sgt. Matthew Womack, 3rd Squad Team Leader and Schearback's supervisor, says that Schearback is one of the most motivated privates he has ever had the privilege of leading. "He is always looking to learn something new," said Womack. "As a private, he already knows how to prime his demo, tie all of his knots and how to handle the different charges; which are all essentials to his job, and stuff that most sergeants know." When asked how he knows so much, Schearback said, "I am thirsty, thirsty for knowledge. I go to all different people that do different jobs in my unit, and I ask alot of questions! I want to be the best asset on my team." Leaving a newborn baby boy and wife at home, he is venturing out on his first annual training with the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. "I am loving this training," Schearback closed. "I am getting to do full exercises of everything I have learned; and, I am getting better everyday at clearing the way for my brothers in arms to have a safe way to do their job." The Georgia National Guard 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team hosts the eXportable Combat Training Capability (XCTC) program to provide Soldiers with an experience similar to combat missions overseas. XCTC is a battalion field-training instrument designed to certify company proficiency in coordination with First Army. More than 2,000 Georgia Guardsmen have converged on the regional training center at Fort Stewart, minimizing cost and time otherwise spent traveling to one of the Army’s Combat Training Centers in Fort Irwin, Calif. or Fort Polk, La.
