Georgia Army National Guard Sgt. Frank Pizzaro, a mortar section sergeant with Alpha Company, 2-121, 48th Infantry Battalion out of Macon, Ga., provides fire direct command while receiving radio traffic from spotters during a mortar live-fire exercise at the Georgia Garrison Training Center, Fort Stewart, Ga. Pizzaro’s mortar team, the Avengers, has three primary sections which include a spotting team, a gun sergeant and a fire team. Pizzaro controls the fire team by relaying commands to the gun sergeant when to fire, what type of rounds to use, any adjustments that need to be made, how many rounds to fire, and when to stop firing. The Avengers are participating in the 48th Brigade’s eXportable Combat Training Capabilities (XCTC) training at Fort Stewart designed to provide soldiers with an experience similar to combat missions overseas.
