Sgt. James Tamrat, a marksmanship coach, helps Rct. Daron Prescod, Platoon 1094, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, with a shooting position Oct. 23, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits such as Prescod, an 18-year-old native of Brooklyn, N.Y., learned and practiced the fundamentals of marksmanship for an entire week before firing a single round. Tamrat is a 23-year-old Baltimore native. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate Nov. 27, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
