Maj. Gen. John F. Nichols, Texas adjutant general and commander of the Texas Military Forces, answers questions from the local Boy Scout troop after the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor presentation ceremony honoring the service of Audie L. Murphy in Farmersville, Texas, Oct. 29, 2013. The medal, the state's highest military award for valor, was presented to Nadine Murphy Lockey, Murphy's sister, on his behalf. Born in 1925, Murphy, enlisted in the military at the age of 17. His service earned him 33 awards, including the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest honor for bravery in combat. He joined the Texas Military Forces in 1950, eventually reaching the rank of major.
