Capt. Gantumur Batchuluun, Mongolian army company commander (center), points to the imaginary country of Marislova during tabletop exercise governing approaches and strategies at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies Nov. 12. Batchuluun’s colleagues (from left) Capt. Imer Avdiu, training officer for land forces command in Kosovo, U.S. Air Force Maj. Dear Beloved, a regional affairs specialist, and German army Maj. Dennis John, a deputy battalion commander, look on. The exercise, part of the Program in Applied Security Studies – Capacity Building here, tested a number of areas the 97 participants have been working in since Sept. 26. Hailing from 42 countries, the participants come from the U.S. European Command, U.S. Central Command and U.S. Africa Command areas of responsibility. Three other exercises will further test participants on national security strategy, organization and institution building, and a capstone exercise culminating their learning at the Marshall Center. The Marshall Center is a German-American partnership, and is one of five Defense Department regional centers located around the world overseen by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency in Washington, D.C.
