Lt. Gen. Richard Mills, commander of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North, speaks during a press conference for the Bayou Classic held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Nov. 26, 2013. Mills and other local Marines with the Corps’ recruiting command attended the conference, continuing the 13-year partnership between the Marine Corps and the Bayou Classic. There are approximately 20,000 African American men and women currently serving in the United States Marine Corps, making up about 10% of the total force. The Bayou Classic is part of the Marine Corps investment in a diverse and representative officer corps. For 39 years, the Bayou Classic has showcased the long-standing rivalry between the Southern University Jaguars and the Gambling State University Tigers. The United States Marine Corps has been a partner of the Bayou Classic for 13 consecutive years in celebration of the hard work, courage and commitment to excellence exhibited by its many participants.
