Seaman Nicole Lafleur, of Las Vegas, Nevada is assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion - 17 deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. This is her first tour of duty outside the United States.Lafleur, along with a team of highly motivated Seabees and the 814th Multi-Roll Bridge Company are working together on a large scale bridge building project located in western Iraq. Seabees attached to NMCB-17 are taking the lead moving an estimated 70 thousand cubic yards of earth to aid in completion of the 300 meter Maybey-Johnson Float Bridge that will span across the Euphrates River. When complete the project will help increase local commerce, trade, and travel for the Iraqi population in the area.Lafleur joined the Navy in 2006 as a heavy equipment operator. On the current project she gets a minimum of 8 hours a day running equipment. "It's hard being away from home but it's a once in a lifetime experience and I get to operate the D-9 dozer, front end loaders and graders. I'm enjoying every minute of it. Things here are very different from home, but it's interesting learning different cultures and different ways of life," said Lafleur.
