Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Pvt. Dawn Pietrowiak makes a phone call during on-base liberty Dec. 15, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits may only write letters to communicate with family and friends throughout training, and Pietrowiak, Platoon 4042, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, finally earned her title of Marine and a chance to call home after 12 weeks on the island. On-base liberty was implemented into recruit training in 1996 in conjunction with Marine Week, the time spent between the Crucible and graduation when new Marines adjust to new responsibilities. Pietrowiak, 20, from Cary, Ill., is scheduled to graduate Dec. 20, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
