Pvt. Teagan LaPiere, Platoon 1102, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, gazes over the snack options in the Marine Corps Exchange on Parris Island, S.C., during the company's on-base liberty Dec. 15, 2013. Throughout training, the Marines' meals are strictly scheduled. On-base liberty was implemented into recruit training in 1996 in conjunction with Marine Week, the time spent between the Crucible and graduation when new Marines adjust to new responsibilities. LaPiere, 19, from Bar Harbor, Maine, is scheduled to graduate Dec. 20, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
