New Marines of Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, walk along the streets of Parris Island, S.C., during their on-base liberty Dec. 15, 2013. The Marines used this time to make phone calls, purchase wristwatches and indulge in various activities that had been off limits for the previous 12 weeks, such as visiting the base’s exchange and movie theater. On-base liberty was implemented into recruit training in 1996 in conjunction with Marine Week, the time spent between the Crucible and graduation when new Marines adjust to new responsibilities. Delta Company is scheduled to graduate Dec. 20, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
