Three years ago, retired Marine Gunnery Sgt. Daniel Baumgardner, a Jacksonville, N.C., native, and a few other Marines in the Marine Corps Detachment at Fort Benning, decided to turn their Monday morning trail run into something bigger. “When we started this [race] three years ago, we never expected it would have grown to be like it is today,” Baumgardner said, following the 2014 Chesty Puller 13.1 Trail Race at Fort Benning, Ga.
