Lance Cpl. Lance M. Lewis, heavy equipment maintenance mechanic, Support Company, 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, represents his battalion in a Humvee-pull competition, during the St. Patrick’s Day field meet, March 17, 2014. Engineer battalions and companies from 1st MLG, 1st Marine Division and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, meet annually near St. Patrick’s Day to compete in number events to determine the best engineer battalion or company and build camaraderie, communication and morale between the units. Marine combat engineers began the tradition of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day through bouts of friendly competition after adopting St. Patrick as their patron saint, because he, allegedly, invented mortar.
