Marines with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, present arms during the playing of the National Anthem at the unit’s 73rd birthday celebration Mar. 26, 2014, at Marston Pavilion aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. In February of 1943, the battalion deployed with 2nd Marine Division participating in battles of Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa as part of the U.S. Pacific Theater campaign of World War II.
