Drill instructor Sgt. Donald Miller encourages a new recruit of Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, to move quickly after his arrival at Parris Island, S.C., on April 28, 2014. This was only the beginning of the recruits’ three-month stay on the island, but drill instructors such as Miller, a 28-year-old from Nacogdoches, Texas, ensure recruits learn the standards expected of them during training, including completing tasks quickly and efficiently. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate July 25, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
