U.S. Army Capt. Jason Collins, Army South Headquarters Headquarters Battalion, jots down notes during a field training exercise in El Salvador May 12. The scenario involved a school bus colliding with a van that carried hazardous materials on the busy Pan American Highway. The victims were actually 25 police cadets in training and the exercise tested El Salvadorian first-responders' response time, procedures and collaboration with other agencies. FA-HUM, a disaster preparedness and humanitarian two-week exercise takes place in El Salvador from May 5-16. The U.S. Southern Command-sponsored exercise includes command post and field exercises for not only El Salvador but about a dozen other countries from Central, North and South America.
