Sailors respond to boat distress call

Ensign Nicholas Ruesch looks as Machinist's Mate 3rd Class James Baker explains to Kirt Bottinghouse how to use his GPS April 25 after responding to their distress call. The two men were boating from Avalon, Calif., to Newport Beach when they ran out of gas. The ship's crew assessed the condition of the crew and boat, and provided the boaters with fuel. A Coast Guard Assist Vessel later guided the boat back to Newport Beach. Dubuque and the Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group (PEL ARG) are wrapping up CERTEX (Certification Exercise). The exercise is intended to confirm the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and PEL ARG are ready to deploy together later this spring. PEL ARG is composed of USS Peleliu (LHA 5), USS Dubuque (LPD 8) and USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52).
