Navy personnel from the Naval Oceanography Special Warfare Command (right) speak with Marines from 2nd Intelligence Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force about the Marines’ underwater survey equipment at Camp Pendleton, Calif., July 17, 2014. The Marines deployed two Zodiac boats to conduct surveys of underwater terrain at several of the base’s beaches. One team of Marines also measured water depths from the beach using positioning equipment while the second team used depth-finding sonar off the coast. The Navy tested its autonomous underwater vehicle in conjunction with the Marines as a way of exploring cross branch techniques and strategies. The Marines’ successful deployment of their survey program to California helped prove their concept has the potential to reach out and support Marine units in various training and operational environments in the future.
