A member of Naval Oceanography Special Warfare Command deploys an autonomous underwater vehicle from a beach at Camp Pendleton, Calif., July 17, 2014. Navy personnel used the AUV as part of a joint hydrographic survey exercise with Marines from 2nd Intelligence Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force. One team of Marines measured water depths from the beach using positioning equipment while a second team used depth-finding sonar off the coast. The Navy tested its AUV in conjunction with the Marines. The AUV will allow the Navy to complete preprogrammed hydrographic surveys in various aquatic environments with a high degree of detail.
