Lance Cpl. Paul J. Whidden, from Naugatuck, Conn., drops a round into a mortar tube Sept. 11 during the 3rd Marine Division Annual Rifle Squad and Crew-Served Weapons Competition at the Central Training Area. Maintaining the infantry skills executed throughout the competition is vital to mission accomplishment when under operational duress. Whidden is a mortarman with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, currently attached to 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, under the unit deployment program.
