Rear Adm. Joseph D. Kernan, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (NAVSO) and U.S. 4th Fleet, visits with Brazilian Army Lt. Gen. Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz, the outgoing MINUSTAH military forces commander, during the MINUSTAH change-of-command. Brazilian Army Maj. Gen. Floriano Peixoto Vieira Neto relieved Cruz as MINUSTAH military forces commander in a ceremony in Gonaives, April 8. MINUSTAH is a multidimensional United Nations stabilization operation in Haiti that worked alongside USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) during disaster response efforts in 2008. U.S. 4th Fleet diverted Kearsarge to provide Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief (HA/DR) after several hurricanes and tropical storms hit Haiti in 2008. U.S. 4th Fleet is the operational commander of Naval forces temporarily assigned in Latin America. (U.S. Navy photo by Croatian Lt. Col. Damir Milonivic/Released).
