090704-N-UI352-068 .BOSTON, Mass. (July 4, 2009) USS Constitution Sailor of the Year, Navy Counselor 1st Class Paul Grunder (at mic) leads a crowd of thousands in the Pledge of Allegiance at the Old State House in Boston on the morning of July 4th. Also on the balcony assigned to Old Ironsides are Storekeeper 1st Class Benjamin Hanson (left) and Electrician's Mate 1st Class Michael Pendergraft. The event was part of the annual 4th of July Flag Raising Ceremony which began at Boston City Hall Plaza and paraded to the Old State House where a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts completes the tradition by reading the Declaration of Independence to the crowd. The ceremony was just one of his many Navy events scheduled during the Independence Day Weekend at the end of Boston Navy Week. Navy Weeks are designed to show Americans the investment they have made in their Navy and increase awareness in cities that do not have a significant Navy presence.
