New York Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Ryan Bhoorasingh of the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry prepare to step off for the city parade towards St. Patrick's Cathedral, March 17, in New York City with an Irish Wolfhound, a symbol of the unit and reflection of its Irish root. "Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked" is the common saying for the Irish Wolfhounds. The New York National Guard unit has led the citywide parade for 158 years, since the unit first formed from the large Irish immigrant population in lower Manhattan.
