Marines assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 163 (Reinforced) secure and inspect the laser guidance system of a GBU-54 bomb as it is loaded on the wing of an AV-8B Harrier jet on the flight deck of amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). Makin Island is the flagship of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed in support of maritime and theater security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
