Maj. Michael Hays congratulates Mary Sanders on her selection to attend the Platoon Leaders Class during a surprise visit to the University of Alabama Jan. 20, 2015, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Hays, the commanding officer of Marine Recruiting Station Montgomery, recognized the 19-year-old young gymnast for her decision to serve her country not only as a Marine, but as a Marine officer. Sanders, from Prattville, Ala., said she wanted to be a Marine officer because she wanted to be a leader, like her father, who served in the Marine Corps and Army.
