About 38 New Mexico National Guard soldiers with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 171st Aviation Regiment, are deploying to Kuwait with a stop in Fort Hood, Texas, for some additional training. The unit will perform medical evacuation duties in the Middle East. Retired Maj. Richard Mayes, left, a World War II Marine Corps Corsair pilot, attended the ceremony to support his son-in-law, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joseph Vigil, who escorted him to receive a challenge coin for his service.
