150209-N-WL435-033 DARWIN, Australia (Feb. 9, 2015) Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert and Vice Adm. Tim Barrett, chief of the Australian navy, render respect after ceremoniously laying wreaths at the USS Peary (DD 226) Memorial to honor the lives of the men who died on the ship in the waters near Darwin defending the freedom of Australia against the Japanese during WWiI. The four-inch gun, which serves as a reminder of arms brought to bear in defense of the land upon which it now rests, was salvaged from the wreckage, restored and dedicated to the crew here on the Esplanade 50 years later in 1992.
