Marines attached to Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force were afforded the opportunity to take a tour of the ancient temples in the area, Feb. 15. One of the sites visited was the headless statue of seated Buddha. Legends attribute the headless sculptures to a takeover, hundreds of years ago, by Burmese soldiers who subsequently removed the heads and took gold, jewels and other relics that had been placed inside the statues. The Marines visiting the site were there in support of Exercise Cobra Gold 2015, a Thailand / United States, co-sponsored multinational exercise, conducted annually in the Kingdom of Thailand, with 25 nations participating this year.
