Senior Airman Brandon Pfannenstielf (left), and Staff Sgt. Noah Bolton (right), are for the moment volunteer coloring book and photography mentors from the Manas Air Base Outreach Society (MABOS) in the visitation room of the Kyrgyz Republic Cancer Center. Mr. Savva Mazroyanidi (center) provides English - Russian language interpretation, transportation and support for all to enjoy the visit. Senior Airman Pfannenstiel is a native of Warrensburg, Missouri. Staff Sgt Bolton, a Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning specialist, is native to Republic, Missouri, from the 509th Civil Engineering Squadron, Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. Both are deployed to the 376th Expeditionary Civil Engineering Squadron, Manas Air Base, Kyrgyz Republic, and assigned to the 509th Civil Engineering Squadron, Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. This is facility is the only national cancer center in the Kyrgyz Republic, and is one of the MABOS focus group locations. The ward houses 40 patients in 9 rooms, but because of the distance and cost to travel there, a parent of each child stay in residence with them for the one-year treatment of various kinds of cancer, making 80 people in residence. Despite the crowded living conditions, the cancer center reports a 70% recovery rate of early-diagnosed cancer. Although government funded, the money does not pay for all the costs. Damiria Omoorzakovna, principal and lead doctor, spends most of her time raising funds for the center. Recent donations include from an Italian football captain, for $200,000 in bone marrow operations. Another is $3,000,000 dollars from the Italian government for a new facility, but more is needed to cover the total cost. (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt. Lance Cheung)
