Large crowds turned out for the open air Catholic Mass in Ste. Mere Eglise, France, on June 7. The service was performed by Monsignor Stanilas Lalanne of Coutances, France. The mass was held in the church square directly under John Steele, 82nd Airborne Division, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, whose parachute became tangled in the church steeple, where he hung until being cut down by the enemy and captured. He would soon escape later in the day. The Monsignor's message called for peace throughout the world and an end to all wars. He thanked the brave young men who were willing to sacrifice their lives so others could live free.
