Nineteen teams of six cavalry scouts gather at the start of the recon run portion of the Command Sgt. Maj. William “Joe” Gainey Cup May 5 at Fort Benning, Ga. This is only the second Gainey Cup in which cavalry scouts competed to be the best cavalry scout squad in the Army. According to the competition website, “The best scout squad of the United States Army must be adaptable, survivable, lethal, and competent in the fundamentals of reconnaissance and security.” (U.S. Army photo by Patrick A.
