Ancient Histria (or Istros - a Thracian river god. Istros is an old Greek word for Danube) was a Greek colony town of the Black Sea coast at about 110 B.C. Around the year 30 A.D., Histria became a Roman town and it continued to exist for 14 centuries up to the Roman-Byzantine period when access to the Black Sea was gradually cut by sand deposits. Later on Avars and Slav invaders destroyed almost the entire fortress in century 7 A.D.
