150223-N-YM718-137 JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii (Feb. 23, 2015) – Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class (SW) Vaughn Whitaker, a native of Humboldt, Calif., assigned to the Weapons department aboard the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) lowers a Mark 48 Advanced Capability torpedo to secure in the ship’s magazine during a weapons handling evolution. The Emory S. Land primarily serves as a forward-deployed expeditionary submarine tender conducting coordinated tended moorings and afloat maintenance on surface ships and submarines in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility. Through this recent torpedo handling evolution the Emory S. Land is serving as a mobile armory to the submarine fleet in the Pacific.
