During a relay race conducted Dec. 2, 2015, at Holy Family Home in Osaka, Japan, two young ladies help Army Sgt. Maj. Danny Sanders, an Oceanside, Calif., native serving as the G3 (plans and operations) sergeant major, U.S. Army Japan (USARJ), balance a ball on a handkerchief. The friendly game was one of several interactive activities conducted by U.S. Army Japan and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Middle Army senior noncommissioned officers to develop a closer connection with the Holy Family Home children, volunteers and staff members. Holy Family Home’s relationship with the U.S. Army began Christmas Day, 1949, when Soldiers from the 27th Infantry Regiment—more fondly called the Wolfhounds—visited the home to give gifts to the children. Today many Soldiers from the 27th Infantry Regiment regularly visit Holy Family Home, while families from the Wolfhound community sponsor several children for what is a likely a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hawaii.
