Carter was one of the Soldiers who passed away in the Gander plane crash. The ceremony honored the 248, 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment Soldiers who lost their lives in a tragic aircraft crash in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada on Dec. 12, 1985. The Soldiers were returning from a six-month peacekeeping mission in the Sinai Peninsula. The ceremony marked the 30th anniversary of this tragedy. Canadian Sugar Maple trees were planted in the park 25 years ago to honor and remember each one of the fallen Soldiers from the Gander plane crash. Mrs. Mary Lou Carter, the mother of Sgt.
