1st Lt. Jim Kirchner stands near the spot where he was struck by a mortar in June 2005 at Camp al Mahmudiyah, formally known as Forward Operating Base St. Michael. Kirchner is a part of Operation Proper Exit, a program designed to bring Soldiers back to the places they were injured in hopes of helping them find closure. The program is sponsored by the Troops First Foundation, with support of the USO, and has made three trips to Iraq since the summer of 2009.
