Maj. Bennet W. Walsh prepares for a convoy that will ultimately take him back to the United States, where he will have surgery to stop the spread of cancer. Walsh relinquished command of Weapons Compnay, 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, 15 days prior to the medical deadline he was given for the surgery. While in Kuwait, he learned of his cancerous condition and decided to push his personal health aside to lead his Marines into combat in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. Walsh is 36, from Springfield, Mass.
