Col. Steven Bensend is congratulated by Maj. Gen. Joe Anderson, Chief of Staff, U.S. Forces in Iraq after he received the Bronze Star medal outside the al Salam Palace Chapel in Baghdad, Iraq, Jan. 7. Anderson was on hand to present the award to Bensend, commander of the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Wisconsin National Guard, for the efforts put forth during his deployment in Iraq. Bensend been in command of the Joint Area Support Group-Central since May of 2009 and has watched the American Armed Forces footprint shrink exponentially over the months of their deployment.
