U.S Air Force Capt. Patrick Shanks, an instructor pilot assigned to the 909th Air Refueling Squadron in Kadena, Japan, flies a KC-135 Stratotanker for a mid-air refueling flight Feb. 11, 2016, over the Pacific during exercise Cope North 2016, a multilateral field training exercise to improve combat readiness, develop a synergistic disaster response, and increase interoperability between the U.S. Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force and Japanese Air Self-Defense Force. CN16 enhances humanitarian assistance and disaster relief crisis response capabilities between six nations and lays the foundation for regional cooperation expansion during real-world contingencies in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
