Local children of Capiz, Philippines, gather leaves and trash found on school grounds as part of a community cleanup of San Nicolas Elementary School in support of Exercise Balikatan 2016, April 13, 2016. The school was one of three schools chosen as part of the humanitarian civic assistance projects during this year’s exercise. Balikatan, translated as “shoulder-to-shoulder” in Filipino, characterizes the spirit of the exercise that focuses on Philippine and U.S. partnership and commitment to the mutual defense treaty. The Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. military have a longstanding relationship that is committed to supporting the security and humanitarian interests of the Philippines.
