Senior Airman Chris Burkhart, a surgical technician with the 332nd Expeditionary Medical Operations Squadron, holds out a piece of foam to general surgeon Col. Eric Ifune, as he cuts out a piece to place into the bullet wound of an Iraqi patient at Joint Base Balad, Iraq, April 24. Ifune, and an Iraqi surgeon worked together to perform an irrigation and drainage debridement of the wound. The procedure lasted approximately 30 minutes and is the first time, to the hospital staff's knowledge, that this partnership between Iraqi and American military surgeons has taken place.
