U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney (right), U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) commander, and the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), U.S. Navy Adm. John M. Richardson, enter USSTRATCOM Headquarters during Richardson’s visit to Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., Aug. 24, 2016. During his visit, Richardson participated in discussions with Haney and other USSTRATCOM leaders on modernization of the sea-based leg of the nuclear triad and other areas of collaboration and mutual interest. Richardson also hosted a Navy all-hands call, during which he discussed the U.S. Navy’s design for maintaining maritime security today and into the future. A member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the CNO is the principal naval adviser to the president and to the SECNAV on the conduct of war, and is the principal adviser and naval executive to the SECNAV on the conduct of activities of the Department of the Navy. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
