The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), U.S. Navy Adm. John M. Richardson, provides remarks during a Navy all-hands call at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., Aug. 24, 2016. During the forum, Richardson discussed the U.S. Navy’s design for maintaining maritime security today and into the future and answered questions from members of the audience. While here, Richardson also participated in discussions with U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) commander, and other USSTRATCOM leaders on modernization of the sea-based leg of the nuclear triad and other areas of collaboration and mutual interest. A member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the CNO is the principal naval adviser to the president and to the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) on the conduct of war, and is the principal adviser and naval executive to the SECNAV on the conduct of activities of the Department of the Navy. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
