ENTERPRISE, Ala. (Sept. 11, 2016) -- Lt. Col. James B. Wharton (right foreground), from Arab, Ala., the outgoing commander of the officially deactivated 1st Squadron, 131st Cavalry, Alabama Army National Guard, is joined by Command Sgt. Maj. The unique event included an initiation of 12 unit members into the Order of Saint George in recognition of their being exceptional cavalrymen, the deactivation of the 1st of the 131st Cavalry, the activation of the 1st of the 173rd Infantry and a concurrent change of command due to the new designation of the unit mission, from cavalry to infantry.
Guests in attendance included select leaders of the Alabama Army National Guard, former members of the unit being deactivated, and families and friends of the Soldiers who began the day as the 1st of the 131st Cavalry, but ended it as the 1st of the 173rd Infantry.
