HOPE HULL, Ala. (Sept. 17, 2016) -- Col. Zachary E. Maner (left), the commanding officer of the 122nd Troop Command, Alabama Army National Guard, presents the unit colors of Detachment 2, Company C (Air Ambulance), 1st Battalion, 111th Aviation Regiment, 122nd Troop Command, Alabama Army National Guard for the first time to Capt. Ryan J. Langhammer (center) as Staff Sgt. Elaine Spruill (right), an air ambulance noncommissioned officer assigned to the detachment, observes the symbolic exchange. Langhammer becomes the first commanding officer of the detachment in a ceremony to activate the unit at Army Aviation Support Facility #1, Fort R. W. Shepherd Armory, here, Sept. 17, 2016.
A selection of Army aviation aircraft on display in the hangar for the event includes a new, HH-60M Black Hawk medical evacuation model helicopter, which was flown directly to the unit from the manufacturer, in Lakehurst, N. J., soon after it was completed.
The primary mission capability of the helicopter is medical evacuation, with secondary missions including transport of medical teams, delivery of medical supplies, and support for combat search and rescue of friendly forces in danger of capture by an enemy.
A medical evacuation aircrew of two pilots and two medical attendants can configure the helicopter for the transport and in-flight medical care of two non-ambulatory passengers or up to six ambulatory passengers per flight.
The detachment is the first medical evacuation aviation unit to serve in the Alabama Army National Guard in 16 years.
