HOPE HULL, Ala. (Sept. 17, 2016) -- Capt. Ryan J. Langhammer, from Dothan, Ala., holds the guidon bearing the unit colors of Detachment 2, Company C (Air Ambulance), 1st Battalion, 111th Aviation Regiment, 122nd Troop Command, Alabama Army National Guard for the first time as he becomes the first commanding officer of the newly activated detachment in a ceremony to activate the unit at Army Aviation Support Facility #1, Fort R. W. Shepherd Armory, here, Sept. 17, 2016. Staff Sgt. Elaine Spruill (right), from Chickasaw, Ala., and an air ambulance noncommissioned officer assigned to the detachment, joins Langhammer in the display.
A selection of Army aviation aircraft on display in the hangar for the event includes a new, HH-60M Black Hawk medical evacuation model helicopter, which was flown directly to the unit from the manufacturer, in Lakehurst, N. J., soon after it was completed.

The primary mission capability of the helicopter is medical evacuation, with secondary missions including transport of medical teams, delivery of medical supplies, and support for combat search and rescue of friendly forces in danger of capture by an enemy.

A medical evacuation aircrew of two pilots and two medical attendants can configure the helicopter for the transport and in-flight medical care of two non-ambulatory passengers or up to six ambulatory passengers per flight.

The detachment is the first medical evacuation aviation unit to serve in the Alabama Army National Guard in 16 years.
