Over 6500 Detroit locals witness the commissioning of the USS Detroit outside the historic general motors building October 22, 2016. Detroit is the sixth ship to carry the city’s name and the fourth Freedom-class littoral combat ship to be commissioned. Littoral combat ships give the U.S. Navy a fast, agile, mission-focused platform designed to operate in near-shore environments, while capable of open-ocean tasking. They are highly maneuverable and designed to win against 21st-century coastal threats such as submarines, mines, and swarming small craft.
