Commanding Officer of USS Detroit (LCS 7), Cmdr. Michael Desmond crossing the brow after the commissioning ceremony of the USS Detroit on October 22, 2016. Detroit is the sixth ship to carry the city’s name and the fourth Freedom-class littoral combat ship to be commissioned. Littoral combat ships give the U.S. Navy a fast, agile, mission-focused platform designed to operate in near-shore environments, while capable of open-ocean tasking. They are highly maneuverable and designed to win against 21st-century coastal threats such as submarines, mines, and swarming small craft.
